![]() Greetings: The brutal winter of 2008 is finally gone (almost- it was nice when I started writing this!). Record snows (100 plus inches in Madison- 400 plus in the Colorado Rockies) should leave the various fisheries in great shape this year and hopefully translate into great water for the duration of summer. Having said that, local fishing has finally started to materialize. Remember, the Wisconsin Trout early season closed this Sunday April 27 at dark and the General Inland Trout Season in Wisconsin re-opens at 5am Saturday May 3. If you plan on fishing the creeks, bring your blue winged olives, black and tan caddis, midges and the various nymphs associated with these hatches. The floods in Wisconsin in late 2007 have literally changed dozens of our favorite Wisconsin trout streams- especially in the Driftless area. If anything, the rivers and creeks have been scoured, new channels and holes have been dug, and mother nature has been at work. It was wild to see 100 year old oak trees toppled, with surviving ones having debris matted on limbs 10' off the ground. Fishing remains solid this spring, but the rivers will need extensive rehab work. Our raffle will hopefully raise the $5000 which will be put directly to stream restoration projects which are very needed now. If you haven't bought your tickets yet, please consider doing so! It is an easy way to give back to this great resource. You could win some awesome prizes such as an all inclusive trip to the 5 Rivers Lodge in Montana for two, two SW Wisconsin guided trips with the Driftless Angler and Bob Blumerich, a T&T 5wt rod and many other great prizes. Tickets are $10 and we still have about 150 left. Travel Opportunities It's not too early to start planning winter 2009 escapes. I am going to mention 2 Chilean Lodges that are unique trout meccas and offer a great reason to get out of Chicago from December through March. 5 lucky anglers joined me in southern Chile this past January at the Estancia del Zorro and got a taste of some of the finest small spring creek fishing for browns and rainbows to be found anywhere. You can see a few pictures and details at: http://www.chicagoflyfishingoutfitters.com/travel_destination_lodge.php?lid=31 If you have an interest in small creek fishing for large trout with a bunch of adventure thrown in, the Estancia Del Zorro is highly recommended. The brand new Cinco Rios Lodge, the sister lodge of Zorro, offers an opportunity to escape the Chicago winters and fish an unimaginable variety waters in the Chilean Andes. This is a gorgeous brand new lodge located in the Simson River Valley. They have access to some of the most beautiful rivers, streams and lakes anywhere, great guides, fantastic food and wine. http://www.chicagoflyfishingoutfitters.com/travel_destination_lodge.php?lid=32 Employment Opportunity Unfortunately for us, Nikki will be moving to Michigan in early July.
